Exotic & endangered Palms

CocoLush exotic & endangered Palms
Naturally hand raised from seed in Whitianga, New Zealand

Enjoy a luxurious tropical looking garden with these delightful exotic and rare Palms. Hand grown from seed and potted in easy lift bags, they are hardened off outside and ready to enhance your beautiful landscape.
Of the world’s nearly 3,000 Palm species, about 220 are “highly threatened with extinction,” according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, and many others are headed in the same direction. We grow beautiful exotic endangered palms that will grow in NZ's warmer climes (or in a greenhouse or inside in colder regions). By growing these palms in NZ when they are under threat in their home environments, we hope to keep this beautiful species flourishing.

Chambeyronia macrocarpa (Flamethrower Palm)

Picture
Chambeyronia macrocarpa is a truly stunning Palm from New Caledonia that throws gorgeous new red leaves. It is highly sought after by enthusiasts.
The most stunning characteristic of this genus is the colour of the newly emergent leaves. For several weeks they are a red colour, anywhere from dark burgundy purple to a lighter pink. Thus, they have acquired the name of "Flame Thrower Palm". Mature Chambeyronia are a stunning addition to any landscape and have become one of the most sought after species.

Pritchardia hillebrandii, or Loulu lelo

Picture
Pritchardia hillebrandii is an absolutely stunning Fan Palm.

Some Pritchardia are fussy and difficult to grow outside the tropics, frequently suffering from a yellowing of the leaves. The moderately sized P. hillebrandii, which grows in dry forest near sea level on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai, is a very different prospect. It is fast growing, very modest in its requirements, and its beautiful, rigid, and leathery leaves with a blue gray cast retain their colour.

Jubaeopsis caffra (South African Coconut look-alike Palm)

Picture
This much talked about but rare South African palm will thrive in warm temperate as well as tropical climates. Related to Jubaea and Butia, it is a multi stemmed coconut look-alike, grows to about 5 metres tall and is suitable for sun and also partial shade.

Beccariophoenix madagascariensis var. alfredii (High Plateau Coconut Palm)

Picture
Beccariophoenix alfredii, also known as the High Plateau Coconut Palm, is very similar in appearance to the coconut palm, although somewhat cold hardy, making it a good look-alike for the coconut in cooler climates. It is vulnerable in its habitat in Madagascar.

Kerriodoxa elegans (White Elephant Palm)

Picture
Kerriodoxa elegans is a spectacularly attractive very elegant and beautiful palm, with its completely circular fan-shaped leaves. These leaves are huge to 2 metres across, dark green and silvery white underneath. It is an understory palm and can grow to 5 metres tall. This palm has only recently been introduced to cultivation, but is becoming very popular in the tropics and sub-tropics as a garden and container plant.
